It would also say a lot about Director Shaun: more than wanting a better future for humanity, he wanted a world - any world - other than the one where his father died hammering at glass and suffocated in his sleep shortly after watching his son's abduction and witnessing his wife's death, something which he knew from wandering her mind she would want too.
It would be a secret Shaun intended to carry to his grave, knowing that one day decades hence SS would look at his son and get the ultimate dad joke, and he died with a smile. In a way, the Sole Survivor would be the only part of both Shaun's parents that survived, a living work of art and longing for a world that can never be, hiraeth in the flesh. So Shaun made a set of memories from her perception of him and dropped them into the 'Sole Survivor,' who woke where he was left when Shaun sensed the end. I've grown to like the idea that SS is a synth and vanity project by Shaun: that an unrecorded visit to 111 confirmed the original SS had never properly refrozen, but portions of his wife's dead yet frozen brain remained intact.
Hopefully it's 'shrug of god'd' / ascended fannon by the next east coast fallout. My SS was a dude, but feel free to switch the following up in your head, dear reader. Edit: tried to keep it gender neutral, but the 'their' pronouns grew ambiguous and unwieldy.
